Series: Reconfiguring
Vibrant abstract paintings begin with color as an emotional touchpoint. The paintings are born initially as intuitive collages on paper, and I am wowed by the impact of translating the collages' concentrated energy to large-scale works on canvas.
collage
My collages play with intuitive shapes and lines to distill compositions down to elemental forms and colors. I create every collage with papers I paint myself and make forms by tearing and slicing with a simple razor blade—no scissors.
Series: Eclipse Season
Collages made with hand-painted papers, mounted on watercolor paper and framed in brass.

Series: Bridge Years
The title of this series of color studies comes from The Notebooks of Sonny Rollins, a collection of notes from the jazz icon renowned for his improvisation. In 1959, he took a break from performing to practice long hours, often late at night on the Williamsburg Bridge. It was then that he began to turn regularly to his notebooks. I love how the detailed rigor of his practice granted him the freedom of wildly imaginative improvisation, and I often listened to his music as I improvised with color as he did with sound.

Series: Maximum Displacement
Ink on 100% cotton rag paper with collaged elements of hand-painted papers. Pieces are custom mounted and framed in black.

Series: Everything In Its Time
In this series, I particularly love the juxtaposition of clean, clear forms against the raggedy imperfection of simple white rag paper. Pieces are mounted and framed in brass with raised custom mats to highlight the handmade 100% cotton rag paper with deckled edges and rough texture from felts used in the paper-making process.

Series: Interference
These richly textured mixed media paintings are made up of dozens and dozens of layers laid down over many months. Every layer leaves its trace for the ones that follow. Thicker layers build crevices and ridges that catch paint like windward sides of hills, so some layers peek through in pops of color, while others simply inform the step that comes next—leaving only echoes in the finished work.

artist statement
In art, as in life, I find powerful energy in the tension between seeming opposites—effort and ease, emotion and intellect, surrender and control. I love how abstraction provides range for my search for the “truest” moments of expression. Every piece I create is born intuitively, beginning with color as an emotional touchpoint.
I tear, slice, and move paper to explore how form conveys weight and energy. Using only papers I paint myself, I create forms that integrate the accidents of torn paper with the intentionality of lines sliced by a razor blade. My large-scale paintings begin as small collages, challenging me to follow the spirit of a piece through changes in form and materiality.
